Commerce in detergents and cosmetics was the primary
enterprise of the company at its beginning, operating
out of a 60 sq.m. store in the Kato Patissia
neighborhood of central Athens. A series of other
similar stores followed, but the company soon expanded
in the supermarket business, changing its status to an
S.A. in 1982. The growth of the company brought about
the expansion of shareholders (including other companies
as well as employees) and capital.
Following
the establishment of the first supermarkets in the Athens area,
the chain soon expanded to other cities in Greece.
The
company's capital today stands at
€59,840,717.10,
corresponding to
2,038,866
shares of
a face value of
€29.35 each.
By the end
of 2006, Galaxias operated 105 stores, of which 49 are
company-owned and the remaining 56 on rented property. At least
10 more new stores are expected to be operational by the end of
2007, most of them on company-owned premises.
The
subsidiary Argo Market company, of which Galaxias owns 99.83%,
also operates 13 stores under the same trading name, brining the
total number of Galaxias stores to 123.
